Joomla is a CMS platform that was first introduced in 2005. It’s among one of the most downloaded CMS’s worldwide, second only to WordPress. Joomla competes primarily with WordPress and Drupal for marketshare of main stream open-source CMS platforms. In terms of scalability, complexity and flexibility, it sits somewhere between WordPress and Drupal.
Joomla has many out-of-the-box features that WordPress does not, while WordPress has many plugins available through its developer community.
