Shopify is one of the best hosted shopping cart solutions on the market today. It has a strong developer community, hundreds of add-ons, integration with every major service, great performance, and a very efficient checkout workflow.

Compared to Magento, Shopify has a few drawbacks, which you should evaluate carefully. These include:

Additional transaction costs (beyond your payment gateway fees) of 0.5 – 2% charged by Shopify, depending on your plan/sales volume.
Shipping calculations – you are basically limited to shipment calculations based on weight or order total.
Can’t customize checkout.
Dependency on 3rd parties for add-ons. Since these add-ons are maintained by 3rd parties, your experience requesting customizations may vary depending on the developer.

For organizations that are selling relatively simple products, with workflows that don’t require a great deal of customization, and have limited in-house technical resources, we recommend Shopify.
